Poster Lining

We refer to lining or “mounting on Japanese paper” when we reinforce the back of a poster or print with a piece of linen or paper. This is done to strengthen the original piece. A specially developed adhesive is used for this purpose, which can easily be removed without causing any damage.

Posters were historically printed on low-quality paper, as they were not intended to last. This paper contained lignin, which causes it to acidify over time. This acidification breaks down the paper fibers, making the paper weaker. As a result, it becomes more prone to tearing or crumbling—especially when folds are present.

For this work, we collaborate with a number of professional restorers.
